Fashion Revolution Week 2017

Today’s the first day of Fashion Revolution week 2017. And marks the 4th anniversary of the Rana Plaza factory collapse. Which killed 1138 people and injured much more on 24th April 2013.   So today I picked up a delish cake from Adriano Zumbo here in Melbourne. Brewed a cup of coffee and sat down to read Fashion Revolutions first fanzine back to back.   Money Fashion Power is filled with awesome art work. Informative facts and stories about the people who make our clothes. And it shines a light on the environmental impact the fashion industry has on our planet.   …

Practice Productive Procrastination

We’ve officially moved to Melbourne but the journey to getting settled has just begun… With most of my crochet tools still packed away it’ll be a month since I picked up a hook 😮 .   However this has given me more time to answer comments on Instagram and read my starred emails from you 😀  #winning.   The one question that’s been asked a lot is: “Why do you work on more than one project at the same time?”   The answer:   I’ve been practicing Productive Procrastination – A term I learnt reading Steal like an Artist by Austin Kleon. This book is jam packed …

Yup it’s that time again… Another year done and dusted 🙂 If I had to describe my year in one word it would be transform. Lots changed for me this year. In both my personal life and in my business. And it’s been a fun ride. I managed to fill 2016 with all the things I love and make me happy. And I capture some of the highlights too 🙂 I’m so grateful for all the awesome memories! And a cool app that helped me do that. It`s called 1SE (1 Second Everyday). One of my other obsessions is geeking …

Why I LOVE my period panties. And why you might like ‘em too!

Nicole Inspiring Things, Zero Waste Journey 0 Comments

First up if you’re not a fan of talking about bodily fluids you might want to click away now. Because I’m going to explain why I LOVE my period panties. The next thing on my list to reduce waste in my life was looking at my feminine hygiene products. From the age of 15 I’ve been using sanitary pads and tampons. Again sitting down and doing the maths on the amount of waste I’ve created over the years. I wanted to find an alternative to these products. So as always I booked a coffee date with my best friend Google. …

Documentary on Climate Change: Before the Flood

Nicole Inspiring Things 0 Comments

I’ve been waiting for this documentary on climate change like a 15 year old girl standing in line at a Justin Bieber concert! I was interested to hear what the science had to say. And I wanted it to come out so I could share it with everyone. Because I think Leo delivers the message much better than me 🙂 Over the years my respect for Leonardo DiCaprio has grown as he continues shine the light on the effects on climate change. This is an eye opening documentary and probably the scariest movie I’ll watch this Halloween. To be honest …

Top 10 Scary Movies Of All Time

Nicole Inspiring Things 1 Comment

Gone are the days of trick or treating. Because we don’t have little ones around. Mike and I figure it would be awkward to go trick or treating on Halloween 😉 Also there’re so many snacks around that contain uncertified palm oil these days. I prefer to choose and buy my candy myself. So instead of dressing up and ringing doorbells for candy. We’re gonna stay in. We’ll cosy up under the covers (cause it’s still fricking cold here in Canberra!). Switch off all the lights to make it super spooky. Fingers crossed the new moon will help set the …

Eco friendly toilet paper – Who Gives A Crap

Nicole Inspiring Things 0 Comments

Wait what? Eco-friendly toilet paper? When I first came about this term I had no idea that you could get bog roll that wasn’t eco-friendly. Actually I just didn’t stop to give it a second thought. Because it’s one of those robotic things I do on my grocery run. As it turns out using eco-friendly toilet paper makes a big difference! Here are 3 things I learnt about normal toilet paper: The of making toilet paper follows the same process as paper. It’s made from virgin wood pulp. That means we’re flushing our forests down the toilet. It also has to go through a bleaching process which uses …

I woke up today, stumbled out of bed with my sleep encrusted eyes and started my daily routine. Had my coffee scrolled through my social media feeds. And let my sweet elixir bring me back to life. But today was different. Instead of feeling guilty I got sucked down the rabbit hole that is the internet. Excitement bubbled inside me. With each click I was swept down a different kind of rabbit hole. I had stumbled on many inspiring stories. People from around the world are inventing insanely clever things! And they all have one goal in common: To Make The World a Better …

Little Things That Make Me Laugh Out Loud – New Yorker Cartoons

Nicole Inspiring Things 0 Comments

I remember reading my first New Yorker Magazine, it was on a family holiday to New York in 1996. I was 14 back then and remember sitting on the bog in my cousin’s girlfriend’s apartment and picking up a magazine (you know to pass the time…) As I flicked through the magazine I was fascinated by all the artwork, I don’t remember reading any of the articles but I do remember laughing so hard at the cartoons that my mom had to knock on the door to see if I was ok! Ever since then I’ve always been a fan of …

The True Cost – An Unglamorous Fashion Story

Nicole Inspiring Things 0 Comments

For the past week and a half I’ve had the flat to myself and  have been catching up on documentaries I’ve had on my watch list for far too long… The True Cost was one of them! This documentary opens our eyes to what goes on behind the scenes in  the fast fashion industry and encourages us to think about “Who really pays the price for our clothes?”. This question has played such a pivotal role in my creative journey as it’s where my interest for sustainable practices started. Who remembers cel animation? Well the other day I found these little guys and flipping it back and forth just made me giggle with all sorts of commentary going on in my head 😛 These penguins got me thinking of this traditional form of animation used in the making of cartoons or animated movies back in the day. Think old school Disney, Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast or good old Mickey Mouse. For all these animated films and cartoons each frame of the scene was drawn by hand. Which means and a full-length feature film …

Another awesome market we found on our little US adventure was Artists and Fleas in Williamsburg. Artists and Fleas have two venues in New York, one in Williamsburg Brooklyn and the other in Chelsea under the High line. It’s a fantastic collection of artists, designers, vintage collectors and makers. Every single stall had high quality goods and we took ages to make sure we looked at everything, we didn’t want to miss out on anything! The awesome thing about these markets is there are new sellers every other week so you’re always finding new designers to follow! We loved the screen prints …

We’ve been in Canberra for almost 17 months and making a trip to the CRAFT ACT Museum has been on my to do list since we arrived. Then the other day whilst picking up supplies for my crochet workshops I finally popped in to check it out! The space itself was much smaller than I imagined but as I walked into the space I squealed with excitement as the Portraits of a Tea Cosy was on display! The cosies were amazing bright, bold and rather elaborate. My favourite was The Emperor’s New Tea Cosy 🙂 which of course made me chuckle …

Jennyrose Design

Nicole Inspiring Things 2 Comments

A few months ago, back in winter, on my regular trips to the Old Bus Depot Market here in Canberra, I was stopped in my tracks by an intriguing dress by Jennyrose Design. The dress didn’t fit my regular style so I was surprised to be drawn to it so strongly. Firstly it was a turtle neck which I’m not a fan of, and secondly although the bottom of the dress is beautifully embroidered the floral pattern isn’t quite me. In saying that for some reason I couldn’t leave the dress alone! The more I held it the more inquisitive I got about it. …

Ash & Clay Bespoke Skin Care

Nicole Inspiring Things 0 Comments

After a wonderful 3 week injection of family time in South Africa, I’ve arrived back in Canberra 🙂 The long haul flights always seem to take a toll on my skin however on this particular trip I’ve returned with my skin feeling supple and hydrated. The only reason I mention this is that there is such a noticeable difference! And here’s my reason why: About 3 months ago I decided to change my skin care product, I wanted to try something a little more organic and natural. So on one of my trips to the Old Bus Depot Markets in Canberra I …

How to Upcycle a Maxi Dress into 2 New Outfits

Nicole Inspiring Things, Make it. Fix it. Do it Yourself. 0 Comments

Going through cupboards seems to be my thing for my recent trip back to South Africa. “Shopping” in my mom’s cupboard is nothing new, my sister and I have been doing this for years now.  But this time round I got to go “shopping” in my sister’s cupboard as well! BONUS! Always the most rewarding and cheapest shopping spree 😀 And a nice way to recycle clothes. Although I pulled out lots of wonderful items, there were some that just didn’t suit me, but I loved the fabric and none of us had the heart to toss them out, so …

The Vintage Cupboard – A collection from around the world

Nicole Inspiring Things 0 Comments

While I was back in South Africa I spent a fun-filled day rummaging through my Aunt’s vintage cupboard. Filled with beautiful things collected from around the world from her days working as an Air Hostess for SAA. Most of her treasures are from the 80’s and early 90’s. I loved the bold colours, interesting prints, intricate bead, metal and leather work and not to forget some stunning embroidery. Here’s a glimpse of some bold printed fabrics and lush material. Looking through her jewellery tins, I was fascinated by the ginormous clip-on earrings, can you imagine dancing with these dangling off your ears?!? Serious …

It’s been a while since I’ve made a visit to the Bus Depot Market, but as it turned out to be a beautiful sunny day, I thought it would be nice to take a short stroll down the road, enjoy the fresh air and get a bit of inspiration. Love is

Love is…

Nicole Inspiring Things 0 Comments

What is Love? The answer to this question is so personal and means different things to everyone. So maybe the question should be what does love mean to you? On that note I’d like to share something someone once told me: A wise person once said, “Love…I think it’s when you are together, … you both are more, far more than the sum or your parts. You complete each other, compliment, make each other better…” And that did sum it up quite nicely 🙂

Batik Factory and Workshop in Koggala Sri Lanka

Nicole Inspiring Things, Travel 2 Comments

I was so excited to have stumbled upon this little Batik factory and workshop in Koggala Sri Lanka. It must have been fate as it was our last day and this sign caught my eye as we were driving back to our hotel after a long day of adventuring. Although we were all a little tired I’m so glad we stopped to have a look at this batik factory. It’s the first place we’ve come across where 100% of the staff are women! Well done ladies. I absolutely loved their workshop super simple and very functional. Such an inspiration for my …

When my colleagues Missy and Ruth heard that I’d never carved a pumpkin before they were utterly shocked!
